Some time ago I published a fantasy, a bittersweet memory fragment of a ballerina’s life, who retired twenty years ago. Today’s intimate portrait of a dancer is a flashback to when the ballerina was still young and full of hope and enthusiasm. My aim was to create a series of dance photos, which would not merely focus on the movement but allow me to gaze into the dancer’s mind and stay there for a while.

One summer’s day in 1979 at the venerable Café Landtmann in Vienna I noticed an interesting face, which belonged to a man of around thirty years of age. I asked if I could photograph him and we got talking.
