An offer to celebrate the autumnal equinox: Book your photo session by 23 September and receive a large print free.

I love this time of year when the change in seasons interprets the passing of time. No longer summer and not yet autumn is my favourite spell. Heavy rain yesterday, dazzling sunshine this morning. Ripeness abounds.

Soon it will be autumnal equinox, which marks the time of year when nature makes an offering to us all and explodes with colour before it prepares to go to rest: The fields have been harvested and lay bare. Misty mornings foretell the arrival of winter. Long evenings and log fires are complemented by sunny days that still hold a trace of the warmth and the carefree time of summer, which will soon have become a bittersweet memory.

To celebrate this magical time, I am offering a free print on A4 premium quality photographic paper when you book your photo session by 23 September 2010. The photo session can be taken at a later date or given as a present.

The offer is valid on all session packages, including gift vouchers, and cannot be combined with other offers.

A selection of photographs from my photo session with young racing driver Max Cornelius at Castle Combe Circuit. Max competes in the Autosport Young Guns series.

A selection of photographs from my photo session for Max Cornelius at Castle Combe Race Circuit. The photographs are for Max’s promotion.

Max Cornelius started kart racing early and this is his first season in the Autosport Young Guns championship. At only sixteen years old, he already won the first race of the season, a total of five out of nine races and scored a third. And the season is not over yet.

When the photo session was arranged with my clients (the people, who manage Max Cornelius), I had been under the impression that we would have the circuit to ourselves. In my mind, I was already doing a few laps in my own car and thanked fate for the perks of being a photographer.

Then fate said “not so fast” and I realised that it was open track day at Castle Combe, which meant that we drew a crowd as the photo shoot got underway and that a bunch of middle-aged men were beating their adapted Ferraris round the circuit, three laps at a time.

We had a really good shoot, except that I managed to insult the man, who builds the cars that are used in the Autosport Young Guns series with my remark “there is nothing to this car, just an engine and four wheels”. I meant it as a compliment, he took it for rudeness.

I have no doubt that Max Cornelius will go far. Is he a future Formula One champion in the making?

The aim of skilful lighting in portraiture is to create pleasing, impressive and occasionally eye-catching results. In my own work, I believe that simplicity is the key to lighting. For most of my portraiture work, I use between one and three flash units, depending on the job.

Just like buying a pair of tap shoes does not make you a dancer, owning a camera does not make you a photographer.

As a professional photographer I have been creating photography of the highest calibre for years for clients, who demand the very best in quality. My photographs have appeared in many publications around the world and my work has been exhibited internationally.

I treat photography as an art as well as a craft and every client as if they were my only client. There are no stale setups and no cheesy poses because no one person is like another.

I give every exposure and every print individual attention, rather than simply pushing buttons. I offer a very personal and bespoke service. One of the best parts of my job is talking to clients during a photo session, getting to know them and expressing who they really are.

If you are happy with an inferior service because another photographer is cheaper or closer by, that’s fine. If you are happy with photographs that look as if they had come off an industrial production line, so be it. If you don’t mind looking cheap and cheesy, that’s up to you.

However, you know that you deserve better. Why not try one of the best there is in the business. Try Wolf Kettler Photographer – I know you won’t regret it.

On the intricate relationship of my cats with a pumice stone.

When I was in the shiny new Boots in Bath the other week, navigating an off-beat route through the aisles so that I would not interfere with a brigade of formidable shelf-stacking staff, who can frighten the bravest of shoppers into submission, I heard a quiet voice emanating from the assorted foot care hardware shelf.

Want a scrub, Guv?, followed by a dull bump, which came from the small, mouse-shaped item on a rope tail landing in my basket. I swear it was not an accident. He had thrown himself from the shelf audaciously, facing certain death if he had missed the safe heaven of my wire basket.

Ouch.

You have to admire the bravery of such action.

I do not really have much use for a pumice stone but he looked so innocent and inexperienced that I could not bring myself to returning him to the shelf. He might feel rejected and rejection can do a lot of mental damage to a youngster just starting out in life.

Pumice is volcanic rock, a solidified, frothy lava. He could have recently been evicted from Eyjafjallajökull. I cannot be passive in the face of homelessness, so I took young Pumice to a nurturing home; mine. Young is obviously a misnomer for a pumice stone. It is made out of stuff probably millions of years old or thereabouts. Homelessness for the elderly, even worse!

Kaspar is the one of my cats, who is most likely to acquire assorted objects.

“Leave the cable release, Kaspar, I still need it!”
You have to learn to let go of the reactionary notion of ownership. Do you want to borrow my sock?
“Which sock?”
The one that I found this morning in the washing pile.

The pumice stone, who only a few weeks ago had no idea, what life had planned for him, is now good friends with my cats Kaspar, Camillo and Domino. Together they traverse the house, joined by his rope tail, navigate the stairs, play hide and seek and generally have a whale of a time before falling asleep together exhaustedly.

Pumice now lodges in my airing cupboard when he is not busy living it up with my cats. I suppose I should find him a name. After all, he is one of the family now.
