Pond life

Pond life. Photography by Wolf Kettler.

Have I ever introduced you to the newts in my garden pond? They are very beautiful and appealing creatures.

Newts are amphibians and come from the same family as salamanders. Some live permanently in the water, whilst others live on land but come to the water each year for breeding. When we moved to this house, I built a garden pond from scratch. We always kept it entirely organic in the hope of attracting pond life. Our efforts were rewarded. Over a period of time, an astonishing variety of pond insects settled, along with the newts. Where they all came from is a mystery.

For the photographer, newts are a challenge. They are shy, they are under water, very well camouflaged and they don’t sit still for long.

A newt in my garden pond. A newt coming to the surface of the pond for air. The newts in our garden pond appeared seemingly from nowhere.
