Portraits of a racing driver

A selection of photographs from my photo session for Max Cornelius at Castle Combe Race Circuit. The photographs are for Max’s promotion.

Max Cornelius started kart racing early and this is his first season in the Autosport Young Guns championship. At only sixteen years old, he already won the first race of the season, a total of five out of nine races and scored a third. And the season is not over yet.

When the photo session was arranged with my clients (the people, who manage Max Cornelius), I had been under the impression that we would have the circuit to ourselves. In my mind, I was already doing a few laps in my own car and thanked fate for the perks of being a photographer.

Then fate said “not so fast” and I realised that it was open track day at Castle Combe, which meant that we drew a crowd as the photo shoot got underway and that a bunch of middle-aged men were beating their adapted Ferraris round the circuit, three laps at a time.

We had a really good shoot, except that I managed to insult the man, who builds the cars that are used in the Autosport Young Guns series with my remark “there is nothing to this car, just an engine and four wheels”. I meant it as a compliment, he took it for rudeness.

I have no doubt that Max Cornelius will go far. Is he a future Formula One champion in the making?
