Spring and the naked gardener

Spring made a triumphant arrival last weekend. Photograph Wolf Kettler.

At a time when spring makes a triumphant appearance and the neighbours go hyperactive with their lawnmowers, Wolf wonders how widespread a pastime nude gardening is.

The liberal gardener

What is now a veritable tree first appeared some years ago as an inconspicuous shrub in the hedge. I am a very liberal gardener and what appears out of its own accord can stay. My attempts at identifying the tree have so far failed.

As the light was fading the other afternoon I rushed out to photograph the moon and was greeted by a large, fast moving flock of small birds. There were considerably more than twenty of them and they were flying in formation.

I love occasions that mark the course of a year and enable me to re-connect with nature. These waymarks in the cycle of a year give life a different and perhaps more relevant rhythm. The beautiful sounding Candlemas is a Christian festival that is celebrated on 2 February but its origins go back to the much older Feast of Lights, a pre-spring celebration to prepare for new life.

It struck me when I put down the first cup of coffee the other morning that something had changed fundamentally.
