The thrill and the obsession with having happy clients

Two days ago I received an e-mail message from a client, whom I had photographed earlier that day. Peter wrote “Thank you for a unique and enjoyable experience”.

The next day, after I had supplied the proofs to my client, he wrote “Thanks for … the proofs.  So quick – I am impressed. My wife’s immediate comment;  ‘they are very beautiful.’  And she wouldn’t say that if she didn’t mean it I assure you.”

By the way, I checked with my client and he is happy for me to quote him. Photography is personal and often delicate and confidential. I would never disclose anything that was said or written without asking first.

Every time I receive a comment from a happy client I feel grateful and I feel the warmth, with which it was written – and I cannot help but to reflect upon my work. Comments like these are what makes it all worthwhile because I know that I did something right.

I am a photographer because I love expressing myself in photographs. I have been creating photographs since I was eight. Something that has been with and within you for such a long time shapes you.

I am very passionate about my work but I realise that there will always be a gap between personal work and what is right for a client. I try to keep the gap small by creating a happy fusion between what my clients want and my own creative ideas. I aim to please but I do not try to flatter. Life as a people photographer would be too lonely without the interaction with my clients.

Another fixation of mine is the concept of good, competent and personal customer service but I steer clear of the artificial gloss that you might expect to find in a posh photographic studio, where they treat you as if you were a member of xzy country club with membership fees to match the plush reception area.

I am convinced that true service is an area, in which only small businesses can excel, who know all their customers personally and by name.

I am thrilled as much as I am obsessed with having happy clients although I would never give a client anything that I thought was not right for them.

When I look at some of the other comments that I have received over the years, I realise how lucky I am.
