Black & White or Colour

Black & white or colour

In the style and technique page I stated that I shoot in black & white because of its beauty, feel and fundamental abstractness.

Black & white or colour is not a question of "either or". Neither medium is more superior or modern. Some photographs work best in black and white, whilst for others colour is essential. Neither judgemental nor moral, the issue is philosophical and, to some extent, practical.

I love working in black & white, I feel very passionate about it and I specialise in this medium. To me, black & white photographs have a more artistic quality and are more atmospheric, poetic even. The world with all its advertising, television and magazines is overpoweringly colourful.

Contemplating a black & white photograph can be an act of meditation which allows the viewer to sit back, slow down time and leave the everyday noises and distractions behind for a few moments - to consider the photograph in all its beauty: its shapes, lights, shadows and shades.

A good black & white photograph is not simply a colour image minus the colours. It is created in original black & white and preferably on film. It represents the full tonal range - from the darkest blacks to the most delicate whites.

On a practical level, proper black & white photographs often require a good deal more work than a colour photo. In people photography, black & white can be more forgiving.

Colour sessions are available on request, but the use of a hair and makeup artist is strongly recommended.
