Bespoke Portrait Photography by Wolf Kettler

I was born during the winter solstice of 1960; raised and educated in Europe. I live with Hemingway, Apricot and my wife. Apricot is a cat. So is Hemingway, but he has moved onto a spiritual state of existence.

My work has been published and exhibited internationally.

In my work, I want to examine the relationship between photo-graphy and reality and stimu-late the viewers to project their own interpretation, thus be-coming an integral part of the creative process.

Nulla si sa, tutto s'immagina (secondo Fellini; nothing is certain, everything is imag-ined): Photography is a specu-lative interpretation of life.

My photographs are conceived traditionally on film. I work in black & white because of its beauty and feel. My photo-graphs are not digitally altered.

I like to photograph my sitters on location, in a space of special relevancy - e.g. their home or other sacred spot. My studio, too, is not a sterile environment - it is part of my home and has an informal and relaxed atmosphere.

I reject the kind of photogra-phy, which runs off a revolv-ing template and creates glamorised faces retouched beyond recognition.

I aim to expose people's natu-ral beauty and to express the whole person in my photo-graphs. Rather than merely photographing a face, I try to interpret somebody's essence.

About Wolf

I encourage my sitters to open their soul to the camera, because everybody can be interesting, desirable and beautiful — it just depends on how you look at them.
