Wolf's photography style and technique

the photographer as a young man

Almost all of my work is conceived on film, in black and white and on location.

Film, because it is an authentic piece of material that one can touch, smell and hold up against the light, and because it has an entirely different feel compared to digital capture. Black and white, because of its beauty, feel and fundamental abstractness (more). Location, because it is relevant to the subject, atmospheric, exciting and unpredictable. My equipment is portable and independent from mains electricity, allowing me to work almost anywhere.

Much of my work involves people. I believe that people should be portrayed in their own space. This can be their home or any other sacred spot, indoors or out, which has a special meaning. To me, a studio environment always feels somewhat restrictive, artificial and finite.

I plan every shoot individually. There are no moulds or pre-defined thought-processes. No idea is re-used over and over again. No two commissions are ever the same because no two clients are the same.

What holds it all together is a personal, distinctive style of photography that has had time to develop. I use lighting, framing, perspective and angles in composing my photographs. I want to capture the personality of a subject, convey the mood of a moment or make a statement.
