Bespoke Portrait Photography by Wolf Kettler

style & technique

All of my work is conceived on film, almost all of it in black & white and much of my work is performed on location.

Film, because it is an authentic piece of material that only exists once and because it has an entirely differ-ent feel compared to digital capture.

Black and white, because of its at-mosphere, beauty, feel and fundamen-tal abstractness.

Location, because it is relevant to the subject, atmos-pheric, exciting and unpredictable.

My equipment is portable and inde-pendent from mains electricity, allowing me to

work almost any-where.

Most of my work involves people. I believe that people should be portrayed in their own space. This can be their home or any other sacred space, in-doors or out.

A studio environ-ment, convenient as it may be, can feel a little restric-tive, artificial and finite.

I plan every photo session individ-ually. There are no moulds or pre-conceived ideas. No idea is re-used

over and over. No two commissions are ever the same, because no two clients are the same.

What holds it to-gether is a perso-nal, distinctive style of photo-graphy that has had time to develop.

I want to capture the personality of a subject, convey the mood of a moment or make an artistic statement.

The moment the shutter release button is pressed is indeed a decisive

moment. Black & white photogra-phy, however, allows the photo-grapher to further interpret an image at the print-making stage.

Much time and con-siderable effort go into this process.

The finished photo-graphs are deliv-

ered to private clients as exhibit-ion quality prints, framed prints or as a bound, hard-cover photobook.

For my editorial and commercial clients, I can create high reso-lution, print-ready digital files.
