I am passionately opposed to the use of animals to test products for human use, among them cosmetics and toiletries. It is unacceptable that animals should suffer for the sake of human vanity and corporate profits.
Tests carried out on animals are horrifically painful. The Vegan Society's website explains some of these tests, which include eye irritancy tests, where a substance is dropped into the eyes of a restrained animal causing extreme pain for long periods, skin irritancy tests, where an animal's skin is observed for swelling, bleeding, cracking, etc., and toxicity tests, in which substances are fed to animals to observe signs of poisoning, e.g. tremors, bleeding and other signs.
The tests may last for several days and cause great suffering to the utterly defenceless animals. If the animals do not die during the experiments, they are killed to perform an autopsy.
According to Animal Aid, 38,000 animals are used every year in the EU alone to test new ingredients and products.
I will always opt to work with make-up artists, who can demonstrate that they use cruelty-free products, which have not been tested on animals.
Help to put an end to animal suffering and only use cruelty-free products.
A visitor to my website, Laura A., challenged the ads on this part of my website and pointed out that I was being hypocritical running cosmetics ads whilst objecting to animal testing.
I agree that it may seem this way, but things are not always what they seem:
I can only carry or not carry the ads, but I cannot control them by the advertisers' ethics. The ads pay, in part, for the upkeep of these pages. A portion of advertising revenue goes to three different animal charities - Cats Protection, the RSPCA and a local charity.
By not carrying the ads, I would not achieve anything apart from being silent. Nothing would change. Carrying the ads allows me to publish this page and contribute (donate) to animal welfare in a small way, paid for by the very people who test on animals.
