A PFT or TFCD shoot will not give you a complete portfolio for free but you can get photographs (digital files or prints) for your portfolio without paying any money to the photographer.

Don't forget, though, that even if you get your photos for free, the photographer has to carry the costs. Be fair and put in your best effort.
