Disobedient Art Gallery Exhibits Male Nudes

London, 20 November 2007

Photographer Wolf Kettler’s photography series The Disobedient Male is currently on show at online gallery Disobedient Art (DisobedientArt.eu).

Wolf Kettler began work on his project in 2006 to investigate society's hostility towards the nude male, prompted by the almost complete absence of the explicit nude male body from television, magazines and other forms of popular culture. At least within Europe, this tendency is particularly prevalent in Britain.

The men in Kettler's photography project disobey society's demand for compliance with the above assumption by behaving differently. They are individuals whose self-view differs from what they have been told to represent.

This has wider implications for individualism and enforced behaviour according to norms driven, increasingly, by politicians who aim to seal society within the concept of a new morality (the heir to political correctness), which acts as the glove for a business-friendly code of standard behaviour.

All men in the photographs are everyday people with everyday flaws. With his photographs, Wolf Kettler wants to demonstrate that the ordinary male body, too, is desirable.

The Disobedient Male is not a gay project. Nor a bi-sexual or straight one. It is not a sexual project. The photographs are for all males (and females), irrespective of their sexual preference, age or ethnic origin.

The Disobedient Male exhibition can be viewed online at www.DisobedientArt.eu. (Ed.: no longer available online.)
